HOW THIS WAS BUILT the garment saga: five generations from armour to fabric-flow Β· where the motion comes from Β· what the instruments prove

Fitted rings Β· v4 Β· geno-outfit.js
Garments authored as fitted ring meshes wrapped around each body part, sized by hand in bind pose. Two failure modes, no middle: off the skin it gaped (holes at the armpits), on the skin the body swallowed it β and padding it out to stop the swallowing read as American-football armour. (The founder's verdict, verbatim, is quoted in geno-cloth.js.)

β‘
Full cloth-sim Β· geno-cloth.js β retired
The textbook answer: real PBD cloth at 1/240 s substeps, capsule colliders rebuilt from the body every substep, waistbands pinned to bones. It draped beautifully β and jittered at stride extremes, and burned CPU while the avatar stood still. The sizing war was lost differently: collision replaced sizing but brought its own chaos. Kept in the repo, retired from this UI.

β’
SKIN-DERIVED Β· the turn Β· v5 Β· geno-derived.js
The founder's insight: βyou know the dimensions of the body.β A garment is the body's own triangles β whole triangles, so the topology is inherited and cannot tear β pushed +6 mm along their own normals, wearing the body's own skin weights. It cannot be inside the flesh (it is the flesh, offset) and cannot billow into armour. Zero solver: skinning is the only per-frame cost.

β£
Contour hems + graded hang Β· v6 β v7
Body-derived alone left jagged frontier hems β the βapocalypse survivorβ cut. v6 cuts every opening on a smooth plane and zips the boundary to a regular 64-sample contour ring; a finished-edge band (+2.2 mm, vertex-tinted) makes it read as a hem. v7 grades the hang β collar +6 mm β chest +12 β hem +18 mm β with baked pleats and sag: loose, never armour, zero runtime cost.

β€
Fabric-flow Β· v8 β v9 Β· today's default
v8 rebuilt shirt + shorts as ring-lattice fabric with their own topology β clothing patterns hung straight from the chest, regularised sections smoothing the anatomy (no body print). v9 adds βeasy physicsβ: spring-dampers on the free hem rings only (~770 verts), world-space, capsule push-out so hems never tunnel. Fabric sways with velocity, settles in under a second, costs nothing at rest β and the FROG rides the Head bone through all of it.
The instruments β what each one proves
- π X-ray
- Garments at 30% opacity (+ optional body wireframe). Proves seams track the body through the fabric β the human-eye check the founder asked for.
- π‘ Seam heatmap
- Every garment vertex false-coloured by live distance to the body surface: green <2 cm (hug) Β· amber <5 cm (drift) Β· red >5 cm (float) Β· white-cored red = inside the body (swallowed). Turns the graded-hang millimetres into something you can see.
- βΆ Attachment probe
- The numbers, not the eyes: poses every clip Γ 4 phases + every exercise Γ 3 phases, then measures garmentβbody distance, inside-body count (bar: 0), Ξsource (garment verts must ride their body verts), silhouette bulk β€ body +1.5 cm (the armour detector) and hem regularity (the torn-end detector).
Commercial-safe base β replaces research-licensed Geno. The Geno mesh is
non-commercial research-only (docs/20 Β§6); its CC-BY motions are fine and retarget
unchanged. Meshy.ai text-to-3D + auto-rig now provides a mixamo-named skeleton family:
meshy_rigged_01.glb (athlete), _02 (heavyweight), _03
(sprinter) + an arena podium β walk/run/squat verified by two-frame world-position deltas.
